A hand fasting is a binding of the hands that originates from an ancient Celtic tradition and is where the term "Tying the knot" comes from - it’s a unique and expressive way for you to show your love for your partner. As you tie the knot of cords you make poignant and meaningful pledges to one another. You can handfast as part of a wedding, have it as your main ceremony, to celebrate a wedding anniversary or renewal of vows.
Cords (handmade specifically for your occasion) can be chosen with different colours representing qualities you wish to bring to your relationship and charms are added for good luck, prosperity, health etc.
Included in your ceremony is jumping the broom. This is an ancient ritual performed to symbolise a union and new life together. Hand in hand you jump the decorated broom thus sweeping away the past and clearing the way for a new path together. The broom jumping is a bit of light hearted fun at the end of a wedding or handfasting. It also serves as a practical reminder that married life is not all romance but also requires the sharing of chores and housework! The besom broom is traditionally used and will be decorated with charms, ribbons and flowers to co-ordinate with your ceremony theme along with the cords for you to keep.
If you love to do things differently and wish to have a celebration full of magical moments with nature in mind (outdoors ideal) and completely unique to you then a hand fasting is perfect!
Music composed just for you, flowers, table decorations, favours and cupcakes can also be arranged for your special day if you wish.
